Brunei LNG Sendirian Berhad (Brunei LNG) was established jointly by the Royal/Dutch Shell Group of Companies (Shell) and the Bruneian government in December 1969 for the purpose of liquefying natural gas in conjunction with the Brunei LNG Project. With its widely acknowledged superiority in marketing, financing, and shipping, Mitsubishi Corporation has been an investor in the company since its establishment and currently holds 25% of its shares.
The Brunei LNG Project was the first major LNG project targeting Japan, where the gas has drawn attention as a clean, environmental-friendly energy. In 1972, Brunei LNG began supplying the gas to Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc., Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd., and Osaka Gas Co., Ltd.
The term of the initial contract expired at the end of March 1993, but Brunei LNG's strong record for providing a stable supply of LNG was highly evaluated, leading not only to the renewal of the contract for another 20 years through 2013, but also to the increase of contracted amount from 5 million tons to 6.01 million tons per year. In 1995, delivery of LNG to South Korea was started and now 700,000 tons of LNG is supplied to the country every year.
Currently, construction work aimed at renewing the LNG plant is underway, and with 2013 now on the horizon, the company is moving forward to further raise its production capacity.
