Overview

The world today demands increasingly diverse forms of energy. Nevertheless, crude oil and petroleum products like the ones handled by this division still remain a key energy source, representing around 40 percent of the world's consumption of primary energy. Our trading operations involve imports to Japan, as well as offshore trading of crude oil and petroleum products and naphtha for use in petrochemical feedstock. We also provide a comprehensive set of services to customers, including owning and operating oil tankers, securing distribution offices and managing price fluctuation and other forms of risk.

In Japan, we have built up our own supply infrastructure through investments in refineries and are active in various business domains across the petroleum industry. These range from marketing crude and heavy oil to electric power companies and for general industrial use, to the sale of gasoline, kerosene and other fuels to consumers at service stations. We run these businesses through seven units and two planning offices at the head office; 11 branches in Japan and 23 overseas offices in the Middle East and elsewhere; and through 20 business investments.

Strategy

Our primary focus is to enhance our retail operations, especially those provided through Mitsubishi Shoji Sekiyu Co., Ltd., by way of mergers and acquisitions as well as alliances with companies in other business sectors. Also important to our strategy are plans to further improve our sales infrastructure. This will be achieved by increasing the capacity of Showa Yokkaichi Sekiyu Co., Ltd. to supply petroleum products, and by strengthening our cost-competitiveness. We will also seek to streamline our petroleum terminal and shipping services and optimize our logistics operations.
