The Brunei Project Unit is engaged in the Brunei LNG Project, which annually supplies about 6.7 million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Japanese gas and electric utilities and to Korean gas companies. Mitsubishi Corporation (MC) made its initial investment in the commercial and operational aspects of the Brunei LNG project in 1972, when it joined forces with its project partners, the Brunei Government and the Royal/Dutch Shell Group of Companies (Shell). The initial objective was to supply LNG to Japanese electric and gas utilities. The term of the original contract ended in March 1993, but the project's ability to ensure a stable supply resulted in a renewed contract for another 20 years, till 2013. Thanks to the coordination skills which MC brings to the project, our role, once limited to liquefaction and marketing, has now expanded to other areas, such as LNG transportation and gas production. In the case of transport, by 2002 the company had participated in the two companies in Brunei which own LNG vessels. As for gas production, in early 2002 we participated, together with partners Shell and ConocoPhillips, in a venture to explore Brunei's deep-water areas. With these new investments, MC has secured stakes in the production, liquefaction and transportation and sales stages of the Brunei LNG project, and will continue to look for other significant ways to contribute.
