Major Activities

Liquefied natural gas (LNG)

Overview

The Donggi-Senoro Project is the fourth largest LNG production base project in Indonesia. Together with the Tangguh LNG project, which is another project being promoted by the Indonesian Project Unit, it is attracting the most attention in Asia, the world's largest consumer of LNG.
As the biggest shareholder in this project, holding more than half the number of shares, MC has a controlling influence over its merger partners, Indonesian state-owned oil company-Pertamina, and Indonesia's leading energy company-Medco Energi. In terms of scale, this project is expected to produce approximately 2 million tons of LNG per annum. MC is currently investigating the possibilities of conducting sales activities aimed at contributing to a stable supply of LNG to Japan, the world's largest consumer of LNG. MC is also investigating other projects, such as developing natural gas as a source gas, and developing an LNG transportation business as part of an overall energy chain strategy.

Strategy

In this landmark project, MC's role is different from other existing projects conducted by giant oil companies in which MC has participated as a minority share holder-this time, MC is leading the development of the project as the major shareholder. Through this project, MC aims to broaden and diversify its LNG project development while gaining advanced know-how concerning the development and operation of projects.
Furthermore, by starting up new LNG projects in Indonesia, which has the largest natural gas resources in Asia, MC aims to further strengthen its position in the region. The location of this project, the eastern side of Sulawesi Island, is also strategically advantageous. It is close to Japan and the rest of the Asian market which is the world's largest consumer of LNG. Along with being in a superior position to other LNG projects such as those in the Middle East that are targeting the same Asian market, this project also contributes to reducing reliance on the Middle East for the supply of energy resources.
