The Malaysia Project Unit is developing business in Malaysia by engaging in investment and import operations through a number of core projects. The unit is involved in three liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects in Sarawak, namely “Satu” (Project 1), “Dua” (Project 2), and “Tiga” (Project 3), which respectively began production in 1983, 1995, and 2003. The unit is also involved in natural gas development and production off the coast of Sarawak. All LNG produced from the Satu project is sold to electric and gas utilities in Japan; while the Dua and Tiga projects market LNG to South Korea and Taiwan, as well as to Japan. At approximately 23 million tons annually, the current total volume of LNG produced from Satu, Dua and Tiga is the largest in the world for any one LNG plant, and accounts for 19.4 percent of Japan's total LNG imports. MC also participates in the Gas to Liquid project, which uses natural gas to produce petroleum products. This project is a joint venture with the Royal Dutch Shell Group of Companies (Shell), state-owned Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) and the Sarawak State Government. The business is generating petroleum products, such as high-grade gas oil and naphtha, as well as chemical products and wax.
