Utility Feedstock Unit handles liquid fuels, both crude and heavy oils, used for thermal power generation in Japan. Its main activities are procurement and transportation from outside Japan, the operation and management of domestic terminals, and transportation and sale directly to customers. Mitsubishi Corporation (MC) deals particularly in low-sulfur crude oil, imported mainly from Indonesia, China and Africa. Compared with Middle East crude oil, the content of low-sulfur crude oil is low in light components, such as gasoline and kerosene, and is thus considered environmentally friendly. This type of crude is known as direct-burning crude oil. MC first proposed its use to the Japanese electric power sector in the early 1960s, and full-scale use began in 1964. We now handle 50 percent of Japan's demand for direct-burning crude oil. In shipping operations, MC owns and operates AFRAMAX tankers (100,000dwt). In recent years, accidents involving aging tankers have led to large-scale ocean pollution becoming an international problem, but we have preempted others in the use of a double-hull structure in all the tankers we own. Together with MC Marine Co., Ltd. and Diamond Tanker Pte. Ltd.(Singapore) we are working to safely transport oil while always keeping the preservation of the global environment in mind.
