In the Steel Business Division, we work on the business areas of distribution and processing of steel products in general through Metal One Corporation (jointly established in 2003 by Mitsubishi Corporation (MC) and the former Nissho Iwai Corporation [now Sojitz Corporation]). At the same time, to aim at expanding new business areas, we are developing large-sized steel projects and investing in and operating manufacturing businesses such as automotive components, by utilizing functions as a general trading company.

Overview

In the Steel Business Division, MC is engaged in distribution logistics and processing related to steel products in general in Japan and abroad through Metal One. While, it aims to build a new business model in order to expand the business area by utilizing functions as a general trading company. We also promote manufacturing of automotive components made basically of metal. Furthermore, we are actively promoting to develop new business targeting to a new opportunity of growth, for a further breakthrough.

By optimizing distribution and processing related to steel, an essential material for the manufacturing and construction industries, Metal One strives to provide a stable supply of steel products in a manner that most effectively and efficiently meets the needs of the end-users. Metal One works in close partnership with major steel manufacturers and retailers, as well as a number of MC's affiliates and subsidiaries. The unique production, distribution and processing functions of the company are helping to accelerate various strategic distribution-related reforms, resulting in lower costs and improved productivity for users.


Strategy

Metal One's vision is to become a “Metal Market Maker” that drives growth in the metals industry. Under the mission statement of becoming a “Metal Value Optimizer” that streamlines and reforms the market, Metal One is seeking to become the key player in reforming steel distribution in Japan.

Meanwhile, in the recent changes of the steel industry circumstances, Metal One is further enhancing its alliance with MC, and aims to build and promote a steel business strategy as the MC Group based on its comprehensive ability.

Today, the automobile industry is undergoing a period of major reform worldwide, against a backdrop of globalization, technological innovation and growing environmental concerns. In the Components Business Development Unit, we have accumulated a great deal of knowledge, business functions, and experience in this industry, mainly through transactions in metal materials, the major raw material used to make automobiles. Based on these advantages, we are entering into the automotive components manufacturing market. Developing new downstream businesses enables us to continue to provide services with even higher added value for both users and suppliers alike.

As mentioned above, we are working to build a strategy for business investments and excavate business opportunities by looking down over the entire steel industry. Through this strategy we aim to further expand the steel products business.
