The development decision of Clermont Thermal Coal Mine in Queensland, Australia

Mitsubishi Corporation together with Rio Tinto which is one of the world's leading mining and exploration companies and J-Power Australia Pty Ltd, J-POWER (Electric Power Development Co., Ltd)'s Australian subsidiary, have decided to develop Clermont Thermal Coal Mine in Queensland, Australia through Mitsubishi Development Pty. Ltd. (MDP), which is an Australian subsidiary. Mitsubishi Corporation has 34.9% of stake in this coal mine.
Mitsubishi Corporation aims at responding to steady world energy demand in the future with this project. The Clermont Mine is one of the largest open cut coal mines in Australia, and expected to produce up to 12.0 million tons of high quality thermal coal annually. It will start its production in 2010. As MDP transferred 3.5% of its stake in the Joint Venture to JCD Australia Pty. Ltd., a subsidiary of Japan Coal Development Co., Ltd. In January, 2007, the Joint Venture structure became as follows.

Mitsubishi Development Pty. Ltd. (a member of Mitsubishi Corporation ) : 31.4%
Queensland Coal (a member of Rio Tinto Group) :50.1%
J-POWER Australia Pty. Ltd.:15.1%
JCD Australia Pty. Ltd.:3.5%


Strengthening the Non-ferrous Value Chain

Mitsubishi Corporation made Kinsho Corporation a subsidiary in August 2006. As part of a business alliance between Kinsho Corporation and Mitsubishi Corporation in non-ferrous metal materials and products, Mitsubishi Corporation transferred some businesses of two wholly owned subsidiaries, MC Non-Ferrous Metal Products Co., Ltd. and Mitsubishi Shoji Light Metal Sales Corporation, to Kinsho Corporation in May 2007. Moreover, Mitsubishi Corporation has integrated Nippon Light Metal Co., Ltd.'s aluminum alloy production business and M.C.ALUMINIUM CO., LTD, a wholly-owned subsidiary of MC.
Looking ahead, by combining the management resources of these businesses, Mitsubishi Corporation strives to achieve greater efficiency in the use of management resources. Another goal of this business integration is to further strengthen the base of Non-Ferrous Value Chain as Mitsubishi Corporation Group as to provide materials and products with even higher added value to customers.
