Mitsubishi Development Pty., Ltd. (MDP) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corporation in Australia which specializes in developing coking coal for use in making steel and thermal coal for use in generating electrical power. In the MDP Unit, we provide support for MDP's business planning, management strategy planning, and other aspects of its business.
MDP has been working with major resource companies to develop coking coal and thermal coal in Australia. In the coking coal business, MC formed BMA as a 50/50 joint venture with BHP Billiton Ltd., the world's leading mineral resources company. BMA makes it possible for MC to meet the demand for high-quality coking coal that has been fueled by the steady growth in demand for steel around the world. BMA owns seven coal mines and its own shipping terminal, and is positioned as the world's premier mega-supplier. As for the thermal coal side of our business, we have strengthened our partnership with Rio Tinto Ltd., and are thus able to contribute to the stable supply of thermal coal, which is a vital energy resource rivaling even petroleum and gas. Our investment in BMA is very much hands-on and has established a foundation for promoting more active and comprehensive investment in metal resources. By expanding our business in terms of products, functions and involvement along the value chain in the future, MDP is positioned to make an even greater contribution to MC's overall performance in the metal resources arena. Coking coal for manufacturing steel, thermal coal for generating electrical power and for more general industrial use
