Donations of Solar-Powered Streetlights to Villages (India)

MC has donated 200 solar-powered streetlights to villages without electricity in the Koraput region of Orissa in eastern India. The streetlights were installed by the Centre for Research on Sustainable Agriculture & Rural Development (MS Swaminathan Research Foundation), a nonprofit organization in the country.

India is not yet fully electrified and many rural villages are still without lights. The installation of environmentally-friendly, solarpowered lamps will contribute to the development of local economies and improved safety and security for their residents.

Classrooms for Elementary Schools (Philippines)

Large numbers of elementary schools in the Philippines suffer from a chronic lack of classroom space. The country's government has positioned education as one of its priority issues, and MC has responded to the call, participating since 2006 in a project to donate classrooms. The company plans to donate a total of 20 classrooms over a period of 3 years, and then to continue in a similar fashion as necessary. During fiscal 2006, it donated 6 classrooms to 2 public elementary schools on Cebu Island.

The Manila Branch Office also donated blackboards, maps, globes and other fixtures to the 2 schools.

Support for Coordination and Collaboration among Botanic Gardens in East Asia (China)

MC provided support for the East Asia Botanic Gardens Network meeting (Wuhan, China), which was held as part of the 3rd Global Botanic Gardens Congress by Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI). A total of 23 delegates from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea participated in the meeting.

The network aims to promote cooperation and collaboration among botanic gardens in order to better preserve the rich diversity of plant life in East Asian region. Delegates discussed common issues in botanical conservation in the region, responses to climate change and threats to biodiversity, and other common issues and will be working to formulate and implement a plan for coordinated botanic conservation in the future.

Support for Graduate Students in Japanese Studies (China)

MC began supporting research activities at the Beijing Center for Japanese Studies in 2005. The program has so far provided funding for 10 graduate students at the center to visit Japan and conduct research. Every effort is made to help the students increase their understanding of Japanese society, culture, language and economics while they are in Japan. In addition to their research, they also visit nursing homes as volunteers, and their holiday time is spent traveling.

This year, the scope of support will be widened to the universities in the western part of China, providing funding for Japanese language classes and research into Kabuki and other aspects of Japanese culture.

Aid for Ecotourism Project in Nature Preserve (Argentina)

In 2006, MC provided 84,000 dollars to fund an ecotourism project in the Ibera wetland, a nature preserve in Corrientes, Argentina.

The Ibera wetland covers 1.3 million hectares, serving as a reservoir and also as a rich environment that is home to more than 1,400 species of plants and 600 species of wildlife. The project will install 3 visitors centers within the wetlands, designed and developed by environmental experts at Fundacion Naturaleza para el Futuro (FUNAFU), in conjunction with the state government. Audio/visual programs will introduce visitors to the natural environment, culture and history of the region.

Improving Learning Environments in Elementary Schools (South Africa)

MC and consolidated subsidiary Hernic Ferrochrome work together to provide assistance to the local Morewane Primary School.

Material support includes everything from personal computers to writing implements and soccer balls, but the program extends even further, providing assistance for a Vegetable Garden Plan where food is grown for school lunches, a School Structural Improvement Plan to improve facilities and teaching levels and programs to provide HIV/AIDS education. These efforts contribute to the achievement of the Reconstruction & Development Program (RDP) of the government of South Africa.

CSR Education Programs by Mitsubishi International Corporation (USA)

Mitsubishi International Corporation (MIC), MC's subsidiary headquartered in New York City, holds CSR Lunches to provide employees and stakeholders with an opportunity to exchange opinions regarding CSR.

In November 2006, Professor Donald C. Potts of the University of California, Santa Cruz was invited to speak on "Preserving the Coral Reefs of Midway;" in March 2007, Mr. Beckman of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) spoke on "Growing Sustainable Business" and in June 2007, Ms. Whelan of the Rainforest Alliance spoke on "Marketability of Environmentally Certified Products."

Andrea Mohin / The New York Times
In July 2007, MIC sponsored kabuki performances by Heisei Nakamuraza at New York's Lincoln Center as part of an effort to use cultural exchange to encourage mutual understanding between Japan and the United States.

The performance was well received and featured in the New York Times.
