Construction Completed on Japan's Largest Wood Pellet Production Plant

Mitsubishi Coporation(MC) is promoting the sale and manufacture of wood pellets in order to respond to the needs of customers seeking biomass fuel, a renewable energy source that also helps to reduce CO2 emissions. In July 2007, MC established Forest Energy Hita in Oita Prefecture, Japan, together with two local partners involved in the wood products industry. A ceremony was held on April 17, 2008, to celebrate the completion of a new wood pellet* production plant. Oita Governor Katsusada Hirose joined other guests in inaugurating the plant.

With an annual production capacity of 25,000 tons, the new plant is Japan's largest wood pellet production facility. It will utilize previously unused biomass resources, such as cedar bark and other byproducts of the local wood products industry. The company plans to supply pellets for co-firing in coal boilers as part of efforts to reduce CO2 emissions.

MC is seeking to develop a nationwide network for supplying biomass pellets by initiating similar projects across Japan as well as overseas. In this way, we are seeking to reduce CO2 emissions and to foster the development of bio-energy.

* Wood pellets are a form of solid fuel, made from wooden waste materials, such as sawdust, tree bark and other debris. The debris is pulverized, dried and compressed into pellets that are 2-3 centimeters long and about 6-8 millimeters in diameter.

KPC's global competitiveness is enhanced by its coal shipping terminal, the only terminal in Indonesia that can accommodate capesize ships.

MC Concludes Deals with Indonesia's KPC to Supply Mining Machinery and Finance

On March 14, Mitsubishi Corporation(MC) signed an agreement with PT. Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC), Indonesia's largest coal company, to supply a total of 21 large dump trucks and excavators from Hitachi Construction Machinery Co. MC also joined with the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ and Mitsubishi UFJ Lease & Finance to conclude a finance agreement with KPC. The enormous dump trucks being supplied to KPC have a load capacity of approximately 300 tons and tires that are roughly three meters in diameter.

Since 2004, MC has been involved in providing machinery and finance to KPC worth a total of 200 million dollars. In this way, we have been supporting an essential part of KPC's operations. As KPC's exclusive sales agent in Japan, MC's Metals Group also sells coal from KPC to major Japanese power companies, so the mining machinery supplied by MC is also helping to support electricity production in Japan.

With its proximity to major electricity consumers such as Japan, China, India, Korea and Taiwan, Indonesia is now seen as a vital producer of energy resources that can support electricity production in Asia and around the world, and we are moving ahead to promote the development of new resource projects there.
