Malaysia Project Unit

Planning, development and operation of Malaysia liquefied natural gas (LNG) and natural gas projects

Overview

The Malaysia Project Unit is developing energy business in Malaysia in various fields such as E&P activities off the coast of Sarawak State as well as 3 natural gas liquefaction projects in Sarawak State, namely "Satu" (Project 1), "Dua" (Project 2), and "Tiga" (Project 3), which respectively began production in 1983, 1995, and 2003. Also, the Malaysia Project Unit is responsible for liquefied natural gas (LNG) import operations from Malaysia to Japan.

All LNG produced from the Satu project is sold to electric and gas utilities in Japan; while the Dua and Tiga projects market LNG to South Korea, Taiwan and China, as well as to Japan. With the combined capacity of Satu/Dua/Tiga, approximately 23 million tons per annum, Malaysia LNG Project is the one of the largest LNG projects in a single location, and LNG delivered from Malaysia accounts for about 20 percent of Japan's total LNG imports.

Other than LNG projects and E&P activities, Mitsubishi Corporation also participates in the Gas to Liquid project in Sarawak, which uses natural gas to produce petroleum products. The petroleum products such as high-grade gas oil and naphtha, as well as chemical products and wax are produced from natural gas, and such project is a joint venture with the Royal Dutch Shell Group of Companies (Shell), state-owned Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) and the Sarawak State Government.
