Great East Japan Earthquake Restoration Efforts
Supporting Industry Recovery and Job Creation

Following the Great East Japan Earthquake on 11 March 2011, Mitsubishi Corporation (hereafter ‘MC’) established the ‘Mitsubishi Corporation East Japan Earthquake Recovery Fund’ (10 billion JPY) in order to aid the recovery of the afflicted regions. The Fund includes a range of supportive measures, including the provision of emergency supplies, scholarships for affected students, as well as grants for Non-Profit Organizations (NPO) with similar such missions. Total funds spent since February 2012 amount to 3 billion JPY. In addition, up to 1,300 employees have volunteered on-the-ground since April 2011, helping with debris-removal and the clearing of affected homes in Sendai, Ishinomaki and Minami-Sanriku.

One year on, MC’s aim is to meet the region’s ever diversifying needs by adopting measures which are both flexible and sustainable in the long-term. For this purpose, MC has established the ‘Mitsubishi Corporation Disaster Relief Foundation’ (hereafter ‘the Foundation’) which is subsidized by the original Fund. Whilst continuing existing initiatives, the primary objectives of the Foundation will be to boost industry growth and job creation. Specifically, MC will collaborate with local financial institutions and NPOs, whilst also supporting entrepreneurs looking to start or re-establish businesses by way of investment and subsidies for recruitment. MC will also continue to dispatch employee volunteers to help with on-going relief efforts.
