Great East Japan Earthquake Relief and Recovery Support Activities

In April 2011, MC established the ¥10 billion Mitsubishi Corporation East Japan Earthquake Recovery Fund to support restoration and recovery efforts in areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake over the four years following the disaster. In addition to employee volunteer activities, MC provided a wide range of support tailored to local needs and conditions, including emergency relief donations, equipment contributions, scholarships for students, and grants to NPOs and other organizations engaged in disaster relief and recovery efforts.*

In spring 2012, MC established the Mitsubishi Corporation Disaster Relief Foundation (MCDRF), which assumed responsibility for the fund’s scholarship and recovery grant programs while expanding its activities to support industrial revitalization and job creation in the affected regions.

During the fiscal year ended March 2016, MC donated an additional ¥3.5 billion to MCDRF. The Foundation continued its existing initiatives while launching new projects, including the Fukushima Winery Project, which supports the fruit-farming industry in Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture, through an innovative vertically integrated business model. In March 2019, the winery released its first wine made from grapes grown in Koriyama. After 10 years of effort to establish and grow the business into a profitable operation, the business was transferred to IS Holdings Co., Ltd. on April 1, 2025.

Since its establishment, the Mitsubishi Corporation Disaster Relief Foundation has undertaken a wide range of initiatives to support recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake, adapting its efforts to the evolving needs and circumstances of affected communities.

Having fulfilled its mission to a significant extent, the Foundation was dissolved on June 30, 2026.

Employee Volunteer Activities

Motivated by employees’ desire to contribute to recovery efforts in the affected regions, MC began organizing employee volunteer activities soon after the disaster and continued these initiatives for many years. Over the 10-year period through fiscal 2020, 4,958 employees from across the Mitsubishi Corporation Group participated in volunteer activities supporting the recovery and revitalization of affected communities.

Industrial Revitalization and Job Creation Support

Through the MCDRF, MC undertook initiatives to support industrial revitalization and job creation contributing to economic recovery in the affected areas.

Working in partnership with financial institutions in Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima Prefectures, MCDRF provided loans and investments to 50 businesses seeking to rebuild their operations or launch new ventures.

Scholarships

Through the MCDRF, MC provided support to students whose education was affected by the disaster. Through fiscal 2019, the foundation provided scholarships to 4,907 students.

Support Recovery Grants

Through MCDRF, MC supported NPOs and social welfare organizations engaged in recovery efforts in the affected regions. In total, the foundation supported 425 projects.

Fukushima Winery Project (from 2015 until the end of March 2025)

Following the conclusion of a partnership agreement with Koriyama City in Fukushima Prefecture, MCDRF launched the Fukushima Winery Project in 2015 to support the local fruit-farming industry through an innovative vertically integrated business model. As part of the initiative, MCDRF established Fukushima Ouse Winery to produce and sell wine and liqueurs made from fruit grown in Fukushima. After 10 years of dedicated effort to develop and establish the business, the winery achieved profitability. Having reached a sustainable stage, the business was transferred to IS Holdings Co., Ltd. on April 1, 2025.
