Mitsubishi Corporation Strengthens Strategic Ties with Nissin Foods
Partnership adds Indonesian market to instant noodle investments across Asia

Mitsubishi Corporation is pleased to announce the acquisition of a 34% voting interest in PT Nissin Foods Indonesia, a local subsidiary of Nissin Foods Holdings (Nissin). MC and Nissin entered into a strategic alliance in May of 2015 with the aim of strengthening the Nissin brand as a top global brand in the instant noodle market. The strategic alliance allows MC to hold a 34% interest in each of Nissin’s operations in Singapore, India, Thailand and Vietnam. With this latest investment in Nissin in Indonesia, MC now holds voting interests in Nissin’s operations in five countries across the region.

Instant noodles are a widely consumed staple in Indonesia. Some 13.4 billion products were consumed daily in 2014, placing it second only to China among the world’s largest instant noodle markets. With Indonesia’s population expected to grow by 3 million a year, demand for instant noodles is also expected to grow. Instant noodle retail sales in Indonesia’s cities have also grown due to a rapidly expanding urban middle class with increased purchasing power. Evolving consumer taste is also feeding demand for higher quality and additional choices in the instant noodle market.

Combining Nissin’s advanced technical capabilities and product development strengths with the extensive sales network held by Indonesian retail chain Alfa Group, also a strategic partner, MC will be able to leverage its business platform in Indonesia to enhance product development and sales for the Nissin brand, while at the same time targeting neighboring countries with a similar Halal-based market to expand exports.

In keeping with New Strategic Direction, the company’s current corporate strategy released in 2013, MC is seeking to expand its presence in Asia by establishing strategic alliances with leading enterprises in order to capture growth potential in rapidly developing consumer markets across the region. With this project as the core of its food processing and manufacturing business in Asia, MC will draw on the vertical integration model expertise it has developed in the Japanese market to increase the value of the Nissin brand, while at the same time seeking to respond to the rapidly diversifying needs of consumers in Indonesia.
