The History of MC (Mitsubishi Corporation)

Business Management Phase

MC is evolving from an enterprise that not only invests in sources of growth, but also engages in those businesses and takes the lead in managing them in ways that add to their value and develop them further. MC’s cyclical growth model is designed to efficiently redistribute management resources in businesses where there is potential to create more value, thereby building synergy between its existing operations, finding new ways to integrate strong businesses across different sectors, generating expansive shared value (MCSV) and aiming for new stages of growth.

At that time in the World, in Japan…

A new era sparked even swifter progress in digitalization, which would fuel demand for digital transformations (DX) in industry. The spread of a new coronavirus in early 2020 triggered a global pandemic, the economic impacts of which were equally global and severe. Significant restrictions were placed on the movement of both goods and people, which caused not only a massive downturn in the global economy, but also increasing moves to digitalize operations and industries. New working styles and ways of life would be established during this period, and the push to decarbonize would pick up momentum throughout the international community. More countries and businesses began introducing renewables, and next-generation energy sources also entered the spotlight.

Business Investment Phase(Business Model Transformation Phase)

Entering into the new millennium, the dynamics of industry value chains began to change. Realizing that it would need to radically alter its business model, which focused heavily on its role as an intermediary in trading operations, MC accelerated its investment activities and leveraged them to become more actively engaged in managing the businesses.

In Japan, the start of the 21st century was marked by an IT revolution, during which use of the Internet and social networking systems spread rapidly, smartphones arrived on the scene and more progress was made in digitalization, all of which would greatly reshape Japanese society. Meanwhile, swift development was taking place in newly emerging economies like China and India, driving up demand for energy, mineral resources and other commodities. It was not all good news, however, as the 2008 collapse of the major American investment bank Lehman Brothers would trigger a global financial crisis. In 2015, the Paris Agreement on an international climate framework was adopted at COP21, accelerating global efforts to slow and mitigate the impacts of climate change.

Trading Evolution Phase

In the mid-1980s, a strong yen pushed Japan into a recession, which was followed by the economic bubble and its subsequent collapse. During this period, the business environment surrounding the sogo shosha became increasingly severe, as the notion was that such intermediaries were unnecessary. Stepping out from its role as an intermediary, MC began to expand its own trading volumes through minority investments in upstream and downstream fields. The company also began enhancing its functions to provide added value as both a trader and a distributor.

At that time in the World, in Japan…

Japan's asset-price bubble would finally collapse in early 1991, from which point the country's economy began to stagnate. Elsewhere around the world, things were looking better. With the Cold War having ended in 1989, the world economy was now swiftly globalizing. A surge in investments by multinational enterprises and other interests drove growth in world trade, which in turn stimulated growth in the world economy. This was particularly noticeable in Asia, where the automotive, electronics and other manufacturing sectors were a boon to economic development. In addition to spawning a worldwide spread of the Internet, this period triggered a number of other tech-based innovations, including civilian use of satellites and other military technologies.

Trading Phase

From its founding until the 1980s, MC was primarily involved in trading and distribution. The Company supported a wide range of industries by serving as an intermediary, connecting suppliers and buyers across international borders in order to respond to market changes and customer needs. Given the underlying expansion of trading volumes for numerous industries throughout Japan’s period of rapid economic growth up to the 1980s, MC, with trading commissions as its primary revenue source, saw its financial performance steadily improve.

At that time in the World, in Japan…

Japan enjoyed a period of rapid economic growth that began in the late 1950s and continued throughout the 1960s, and it was during that period that the country began importing LNG. Quality of life improved, and the material affluence that Japan has since grown accustomed to began taking shape. Societies the world over grew increasingly active politically, speaking out against racism and demanding their rights and freedoms, while at the same time, tremendous advances were made in science and technology, best evidenced by the moon landings in the late 60s and early 70s. However, problems in the Middle East triggered the 1970s oil shocks, and the world economy would suffer for most of that decade.
