Mitsubishi Corporation Awarded Contract for Upgrading Transit System at Singapore Changi Airport
March 3, 2016
Mitsubishi Corporation
Mitsubishi Corporation (MC) and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) have received an order from Changi Airport Group (Singapore) Pte Ltd. (“CAG”) for upgrading the Automated People Mover (APM) system at Singapore Changi Airport. MC and MHI will be responsible for supplying additional cars for expanding the existing system as well as for the design, manufacture, installation, and commissioning of the overall upgrade, scheduled for completion in 2019.
Already one of the main transportation hubs in Southeast Asia, passenger traffic at Changi Airport is expected to see even greater year–on-year increase following the completion by 2018 of Jewel Changi Airport - a lifestyle destination located in front of Terminal 1. Completed in 2007, the existing APM was supplied by MC and MHI based on a contract awarded by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore in 2002, and the two partners have since been in charge of operations and maintenance. The MC/MHI team has been providing prompt after-sales service to Singapore Changi Airport for the past 8 years.
APMs are capable of fully automated driverless operation and, by using rubber tires, provide customers with a smooth and quiet ride. MC also supplied the APM for Dubai International Airport (UAE), and has built up a range of expertise in the delivery of various types of transportation systems, including the provision of rolling stock for the Cairo and Delhi metro systems, and overall execution of the projects for constructing the Dubai Metro and Doha Metro systems.
A number of projects aimed at improving these forms of infrastructure are currently being planned across Asia and around the world. MC will continue to proactively pursue business opportunities related to the replacement and overall upgrading of transportation systems, including the construction of new automated people mover systems.
