The Mitsubishi Corporation Disaster Relief Foundation (MCDRF) has provided some 19 million yen in loan funds to Ishinomaki (Miyagi) restaurant operator, Kyodo Management Ltd., in another its initiative to help support recovery in Tohoku. The funds complement loan support already being provided by Ishinomaki Shinkin Bank, a local credit union, and has enabled the restaurateur to complete “Kaki Teppan HASEKURA”, a brand new Italian restaurant. The restaurant opens tomorrow May 3.
Kaki Teppan HASEKURA’s menu will feature oysters produced in Ishinomaki as well as meat, vegetables and seafood produced in the Tohoku region, making it the first restaurant in Ishinomaki to depend primarily on local produce. Through its particular style of cuisine, the restaurant will be a conduit for passing on the region’s food culture to successive generations of local youth, while at the same time promoting the Tohoku brand among patrons, thereby contributing to revitalization in Ishinomaki. With 100 million yen per year in sales as a goal, Kyodo Management plans to expand business to the manufacture of pasta sauce, also from local produce, and will also be targeting the lucrative Tokyo metropolitan area market.
The restaurant will hire 7 new staff and source raw materials such as basil, an essential ingredient for Italian food, and other vegetables from “social farms”, so called for their relevance in providing social services and employment opportunities for vulnerable groups such as the elderly. In this way, the project also contributes to overall employment generation in Ishinomaki. The project was also recognized nationally for its contribution to recovery efforts, having won an award in the business category of the “Revive Japan Cup 2013”. This competition, held under the government Reconstruction Agency’s “Towards the Creation of a ‘New Tohoku’” program, recognizes positive contributions made by small businesses and NGO’s to recovery efforts in Tohoku.
MCDRF decided to support Kaki Teppan HASEKURA because of its potential to open new markets for local primary products and generate employment. Over three years have passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake, but areas that suffered severe damage are still on their way to recovery. MCDRF will continue collaborating with local financial institutions such as Ishinomaki Shinkin Bank to support efforts aimed at the revitalization of industry and employment creation and overall economic recovery in areas affected by the disaster.
