Canada Natural Gas Business

The LNG Canada Project, a challenge undertaken by Mitsubishi Corporation, is Canada’s first large-scale LNG development, with an annual production capacity of 14 million tons - equivalent to more than 20% of Japan’s LNG demand. By constructing an LNG export terminal on Canada’s West Coast, it enables a reliable supply of energy from politically stable Canada to Japan and other countries in East Asia, without the need to transit major maritime chokepoints. Mitsubishi Corporation has tackled this project by drawing on more than 50 years of experience in the LNG business. Join us as we follow the journey of this challenge toward realizing a decarbonized society while ensuring a stable energy supply for Asia - and the commitment of those driving it forward.

What Is LNG?

Liquefied natural gas, or LNG, is produced by cooling natural gas and reducing its volume to one-six-hundredth of its original size. This makes it possible to transport large quantities by sea from production regions to demand centers in distant locations. LNG emits fewer greenhouse gases than coal and oil, and its importance continues to grow as a practical solution for meeting rising energy demand driven by economic growth and the spread of AI, while supporting the global shift toward lower-carbon energy.

01.Striving to Ensure a Stable Energy Supply by Securing a New Source in Canada

Through participation in LNG ventures around the world, MC is involved in projects that account for roughly 25% of global LNG import volumes.
Traditionally, most of these supply sources were concentrated in Asia-Oceania. However, seizing the opportunity presented by the North American shale revolution of the late 2000s, MC has diversified its supply base to include the US and, most recently, Canada.
Canada is geographically well positioned as an LNG-producing country, given its proximity to Japan and other Asian markets and the ability to ship LNG without transiting major maritime chokepoints. As geopolitical risks have intensified and the importance of energy security grows, MC aims to contribute to a stable energy supply by securing new sources of LNG.

Canada’s Strengths

02.Leveraging More Than Half a Century in the LNG Business to Build a Value Chain from Upstream to Downstream

MC’s natural gas business in Canada spans the full value chain, comprising three segments: (1) producing shale gas (natural gas) in inland Canada; (2) transporting it roughly 670 km by pipeline to the West Coast, where it is liquefied into LNG; and (3) shipping by LNG carrier and selling to markets in Japan and across Asia.
By moving early in the shale revolution - ahead of much of the industry - MC secured high-quality, highly competitive upstream shale gas assets, and contributed to the launch of LNG Canada in the midstream segment. Downstream, MC established Diamond Gas International in Singapore to handle LNG sales. By building a portfolio that includes Canada-produced LNG, MC has strengthened its LNG trading and sales capabilities.

Canada Natural Gas Business Value Chain

Since entering the LNG business in 1969, MC has become involved across the entire LNG value chain - from upstream gas development through liquefaction to transportation and sales. The Canada LNG business is built on the foundation of the expertise MC has accumulated over the decades in project development and project management, as well as the trust it has established with customers and partners.

03.Equity Production Volume Reaches 15 Million Tons – Largest Among Japanese Companies – Set to Expand to 18 Million Tons by the 2030s

With the addition of approximately 2 million tons from LNG Canada, MC’s equity LNG production volume has reached about 15 million tons. This is the largest among Japanese companies and ranks within the top 10 globally.
Looking ahead, MC plans to increase its equity production volume to 18 million tons by the 2030s through additional investments, including those aimed at doubling LNG Canada’s production capacity.
Through the continued advancement of low-emission LNG businesses and the launch of next-generation energy initiatives with stable demand prospects, MC will contribute to a steady supply of energy for a low- and zero-carbon society, while pursuing the simultaneous creation of economic, societal, and environmental value.
