Mitsubishi & Mitsubishi Corporation

The origin of Mitsubishi dates back to 1870 when Yataro Iwasaki of the Tosa Domain (present-day Kochi Prefecture) took over the shipping business of Tsukumo Shokai. Yataro and the following three presidents from the Iwasaki family – his brother Yanosuke, his son Hisaya, and Yanosuke’s son Koyata – expanded the business, laying the foundation of the Mitsubishi companies.
After WWII, Mitsubishi Headquarters was disbanded in 1946 by the order of GHQ. The old Mitsubishi Shoji, which had been spun off from the Trading Department in 1918, was dissolved in 1947. Then in 1954, the new Mitsubishi Shoji – today’s MC – was born through the historic re-merger of more than one hundred different companies.

Origins of Mitsubishi’s Famous Emblem

The name “Mitsubishi” refers to the three-diamond emblem, combining “mitsu,” meaning “three,” and “hishi,” a word used to denote a rhombus or diamond shape. Although its exact origins are unclear, today’s three-diamond mark is said to be based on the design used by Tsukumo Shokai – the forerunner of Mitsubishi. The mark is suggestive of the three-leaf crest of the Yamauchi family, leaders of the Tosa Domain and also of the three stacked rhombuses of the Iwasaki family crest.
