What's the story behind those words?
-
Urban-development projects have a lot of different stakeholders, and the ones I've been involved in thus far have teamed me with some pretty diverse and impressive professionals from both MC and outside organizations. They include our business partners, representatives of the companies we're collaborating with, government officials, and members of MC's cross-organizational task forces. I've been particularly impressed by the project managers, who possess a broad array of skills. Their vast know-how and ability to think logically makes them effective at mediating negotiations between stakeholders with conflicting opinions, and they have the people skills that are essential to leadership. Realizing that my own competencies fall far short by comparison, I began losing confidence, which was when my boss and senior colleagues started urging me to believe in myself.
There are still times when my work doesn't go as well as I'd hoped and I start feeling down, but before allowing myself to spiral into negativity, I always remember those words. I remind myself that it's up to me to convince myself that confidence lost at work can be regained at work. I'm also doing my best to repay all those who have accepted me for who I am, advised me and encouraged me. Thanks to their support, I've gained the self belief that I too can one day become a vital cog in the "MC machine."

How rewarding is your current job?
-
Right now I'm overseeing two projects that scale-wise, are completely different. One is a mixed-use urban development built around a large arena, and the other involves the development of a logistics facility. I find it very rewarding to be engaged in these kinds of projects, the former of which provide people with inspiring future communities, and latter of which build infrastructure designed to enhance our quality of life.
The urban-development project in particular has opened my eyes to a number of things. It's given me the opportunity to tour arenas in Europe, and I've come to appreciate both the significance of managing safe, stress-free facilities that incorporate cutting-edge technologies, and how exciting, enjoyable and moving it is to be with friends, colleagues, and at times, business partners in such unconventional-yet-hospitable spaces. I've also learned the positive impacts that those things can have.
We have a vision of the ideal customer experience, but there are several problems to address before we can make it happen here in Japan. My hope is that we can build new landmark spaces in places that already have special appeal, enrich their visitor experiences, and at the same time help to solve the problems unique to those locales. That hope is what's fueling my passion for these projects.
-
What are your next challenges, and what kind of world are you hoping to help realize?
-
All of the work I've done since joining MC has been related to either urban-development and management or the building of new facilities. I'm keen to get more directly involved in the running of properties and communities that make visitors happy. Specifically, I'd like to propose regionally tailored services that meet the needs of those communities' stakeholders and help develop the supporting infrastructure, both in established cities and, once they are completed, properties and areas that are currently under development.
In the future, I hope to take advantage of MC's resources, networks and scalability to create urban spaces that only our company is capable of. What I've gained from my experience thus far and the lessons I've learned from everyone else involved have laid the foundations for my professional future. I think it would be great if I could build on those foundations to help raise communities that leave a lasting impression on both residents and visitors alike, places in Japan and around the world that we can all cherish for a very long time. I also hope to one day contribute in similar ways to my hometown, where I lived until completing my school years.
