Know MC's People
- What words inspire you?
-
Inscrutable are the ways of heaven (Japanese proverb meaning that our fortunes are unpredictable and changeable)

What's the story behind those words?
-
Earlier in my career, I was seconded to a joint venture with a Chinese company to help start up a factory, but I found the work very difficult because there was just so much that I didn't understand. One of my friends there said this to me, and I have since come to appreciate the phrase's significance. Nowadays, progress in decarbonization, digital innovations and other trends are reshaping our world in dramatic ways, and in order to adapt, MC's business models are also changing. The company has changed me as well. When I joined MC, I gained a lot of experience doing work that I'd never pictured myself doing. I met people from all sorts of different countries and regions, and I really grew as a person.
The meaning of this proverb is that our fates are out of our control, so we shouldn't allow ourselves to get too high or low. Some things are just unpredictable, and it's when we're most caught off our guards that we should accept change rather than fear it. This proverb always reminds me of that. It encourages me to tackle any challenge, no matter how difficult, with a positive attitude, and that's why it means so much to me.

How rewarding is your current job?
-
I'm presently on secondment at Toyobo MC, which is a joint venture between MC and Toyobo, the former a sogo shosha and the latter a textile and fibers manufacturer. Toyobo MC is a new company that operates outside the scope of Toyobo's traditional industries, combining Toyobo's technological expertise with MC's vast business network and management capabilities. It's mission is to leverage those integrated assets to develop operations that can swiftly meet the needs of our rapidly changing world. Although Toyobo MC's employees come from different backgrounds, we all have the same dream, and we are keen for our new company to make waves in Japan's materials industries. My colleagues and I are always bouncing ideas off one another, because we're determined to innovate in ways that will help this new company to grow and develop.
-
What are your next challenges, and what kind of world are you hoping to help realize?
-
Ever since I joined MC, I've been working primarily in materials and manufacturing, which these days are facing myriad challenges, including supply chain disruptions, labor shortages, excess capacity in China, and so on. Considering that these industries are essential to our quality of life and vital to the Japanese economy, my aim is to continue taking on challenges and do whatever I can to strengthen them.
